State Policy Directors 2009 Annual Meeting

Once again, CSI organized a national meeting of state Policy Directors and other high ranking state officials from CO, DE, DC, IL, IA, MD, MI, NJ, NM, NC, OR, PR, VA and WI. Non CSI-experts at the meeting included ACEEE, CNT, CSW, DQC, EAPI, ECS, Families USA, George Mason University, KFF, Living Cities, NASHP, NELP, NGA, NAF , NGA Center for Best Practices, Pew Center on the States, Pre-K Now, Pew,PSPP, PSG, SGA, SGLI, and TWA. The first day focused on improving state and federal relations and included meetings with Federal Officials from the: White House’s Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Office of Management and Budget. The second Day opened with a “lightning round” of suggested low-cost or cost-neutral policy options such as: Job Training Scholarships, Educational Data Alignment, Information Access for Voters, Success-Focused Curricula, Smart Procurement, Energy Efficiency Resource Standards, Regional Workforce Development Collaboration, 529 Savings Plans, Fix-it-First, Transportation Cost Disclosure and Promoting Metro, Promoting Cultural Assets, Reducing Capitol Costs, and a National Infrastructure Bank. The Meeting continued with an in-depth focus on budgeting and government performance, education, transportation and smart growth, national health policy, and public opinion.
