Purpose of Meeting
A one day press event and briefing/policy academy that includes the Lieutenant Governor, her senior staff and other stakeholders, along with subject matter experts affiliated with the Center for State Innovation (CSI) to highlight Lt. Governor Denish’s ideas and to look at challenges and opportunities facing New Mexico in a number of key areas of workforce and education policy, including:
- Increasing college enrollment through dual-credit programs and other initiatives
- Increasing college completion rates, particularly in community colleges
- Preparing New Mexico’s middle-skill workforce
Press Event and Stakeholder Meeting- Room 101
Larger group meeting to set high-level goals and priorities for the rest of the day. Attendees will include key stakeholders, and the Lt. Governor’s remarks will be open to the press.

9:15-9:45am Opening Remarks and High-Level Goals (Lt. Governor Diane Denish)
The Lt. Governor will open the meeting with remarks on high-level goals and the importance of workforce development and higher education in New Mexico.
9:45-10:00am Break (press excused)
10:00-11:45am Stakeholder Meeting
Remarks by Cabinet Secretaries and key stakeholders, including business, community colleges, school superintendents and non-profits about the current state and direction of New Mexico’s economy, future workforce needs, and high-level goals for the state’s workforce. Agency heads will give brief updates on their agency’s activities and the state of the state in their issue area. Stakeholder representatives will update the group on related workforce or higher education initiatives.

1:00-4:00pm Small Group Breakout Sessions on Key Topics (Breakout Rooms 123, 130, & 137)
Facilitated roundtable meeting of key agency staff, stakeholders, and subject matter experts to agree upon and prioritize short-term goals and action steps in each area. The session will begin with brief presentations from national experts and state practitioners and will continue with a moderated stakeholder discussion designed to set interim goals and benchmarks and to develop a strategy to achieve the high-level goals set out by the Lt. Governor and others during the morning plenary.
Track 1: Expanding Enrollment - Room 123
Expanding New Mexico’s existing dual credit program for high school seniors, and other reforms designed to increase college enrollment.

Increasing college completion in-state, and specifically meeting New Mexico’s goal of 20% increase in community college graduation rates by 2020.

Track 3: Middle Skills Jobs - Room 137
Discussion of topics relating to preparing New Mexico’s middle-skill workforce, including adult basic education and training best practices and credentialing, with a possible focus on sectors of potential growth, including “green jobs” and skilled health care work.

4:00-5:00pm: Closing Plenary and Reports Out - Room 101
The final plenary session will begin with 10-15 minute reports out from each small group on key priorities and next steps in each area by a designated reporter. The remaining discussion will focus on the setting and ordering of priorities for each area and assigning next steps to key staff/stakeholders in the room. The meeting will conclude with brief closing remarks.
